UK weather: ‘Major incident’ after snowfall as temperatures set to drop to -12C

(PA)

The Met Office has issued a fresh weather warning for London as temperatures are expected to drop overnight leading to hazardous icy conditions.

It comes as several sporting events across the UK were cancelled due to extreme weather, including Crewe’s match against Bristol Rovers in the FA cup, and several Scottish League games.

Freezing temperatures this morning dropping to -10C in some parts of Scotland forced Glasgow Airport to o suspend all flight operations for most of the morning despite working overnight to clear the runway. Two flights set to arrive at Glasgow were forced divert to Edinburgh and Prestwick airports.

The Met Office said: “Rain or sleet is expected to spread from west to east across the area overnight, falling onto frozen surfaces and leading to icy patches, perhaps even where treatment has been applied.”

Fresh yellow and amber weather warnings have been issued by the Met Office as temperatures are forecast to possibly drop to a low of -12C overnight in Scotland, where many awoke to severe frozen conditions this morning.

The warnings, for snow and ice, cover much of the Midlands, Yorkshire, the North West and Wales.

Unhappy flyers after Glasgow Airport stops flights for morning

On X/Twitter, Glasgow Airport said at dawn: “Flight operations are currently suspended due to heavier than forecast snow. Our winter teams have been working through the night and we hope to resume operations as soon as possible.

“Please check with your airline for further flight updates.”

One passenger wrote in response: “The whole country knew it was going [to] snow, so why weren’t you prepared? You have caused misery with closing the runway, which has resulted in Tui canceling the Lapland flight.”

Another wrote: “Plane load of crying weans, due to see Santa in Lapland, leaving the airport now due to your total mismanagement.”
