Sabir Bhatia was born on 30 December 1968 in the Punjab capital of Punjab into a Punjabi family. His father Baldev Bhatia was an officer in the Indian Army who later joined the Ministry of Defense and his mother Daman Bhatia was a senior officer in the Central Bank of India. Sabir did his initial education at St. Joseph Boys’ High School in Bangalore and joined the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) at Pilani in 1986 to pursue engineering, but only after two years under a program called America’s Famous California Transferred to the Institute of Technology (Caltech).
