Sabir Bhatia is an Indian subcontractor and co-founder of e-mail service Hotmail (which is now Outlook.com). This e-mail service established by Sabir today is in about 106 languages of the world and as of February 2013 about 42 crore people were using it. Hotmail was founded in 1996 by Sabir Bhatia and Jack Smith of the United States with a capital of three million dollars and in 1997 it was acquired by the then largest IT in the world. The company Microsoft did about 2500 crores. After this acquisition, Sabir Bhatia became Silicon Valley’s superstar overnight and swept the globe. Sabir started an e-commerce company Rju.com in 1999 after Hotmail’s acquisition by Microsoft. His company Subsebolo later acquired free messaging company jaxtr. After the hot-mail, many of Sabir Bhatia’s ventures were started, but none of them got success like hot-mail.

Sabir Bhatia was born on 30 December 1968 in the Punjab capital of Punjab into a Punjabi family. His father Baldev Bhatia was an officer in the Indian Army who later joined the Ministry of Defense and his mother Daman Bhatia was a senior officer in the Central Bank of India. Sabir did his initial education at St. Joseph Boys’ High School in Bangalore and joined the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) at Pilani in 1986 to pursue engineering, but only after two years under a program called America’s Famous California Transferred to the Institute of Technology (Caltech). After graduating from Caltech, in 1989, he attended Stanford University to do his MS in Electrical Engineering. Here he worked on ‘Ultra Low Power VLSI Design’.

In 1995, Sabir started an internet company called Javasoft. This company used to store people’s personal information on the Internet and these information could be viewed on any computer through the Internet. During this time, the company in which Sabir was working, put a fire wall in the company’s internal network, due to which people could not check their personal mail while working in the office. At this moment, a thought came in Sabir’s mind that why should not e-mail also be put on the Internet, so that you can see your mail from any place and on any computer. He started working on this together with one of his colleagues, Jack Smith. Both first tested and proved the capability of the web-based e-mail system and then decided to create Hotmail. In order to attract maximum attention, this e-mail service was kept absolutely free and revenue started being received through advertisements on the website. This is how Hot Mail was born and the rest is history. Earlier, there was no such e-mail system in the world. Hot Mail was born on 16 February 1996 and on 30 December 1997, Sabir Bhatia sold his company to Microsoft.
Within six months of launching the service, Hotmail attracted more than a million people and as the number of users started to increase, it was noticed by the famous IT company Microsoft and on 30 December 1997, Hotmail received 400 Sold to Microsoft for US $ million.
Other ventures of Sabir Bhatia
Sabir worked at Microsoft for almost a year following Microsoft’s acquisition of Hotmail, and in April 1999 he left Microsoft and started an e-commerce company, Arzoo.com, but the company failed to run and had to be shut down. It was later reintroduced as a travel portal in 2010.
He then launched (with BlogEverywhere) (with co-founders Shiraz Kanga and Viraf Jack) to capitalize on the emerging blogosphere, but it failed to do well.
In 2006, he became an angel investor by investing in NioAxel, a network security vendor and creator of SSL VPN-Plus.
In 2008, Sabir Bhatia launched Sabsebolo.com, a free web-based teleconferencing system. In June 2009, Sabir Bhatia’s company Sabsebolo acquired Jaxtor (an Internet telephone service startup). Even his Jaxter did not get the expected success and the most successful.
