Karishma Mehta is an Indian writer, entrepreneur, and photographer who is best known as the founder and manager of Humans of Bombay, a photo blog that documents the life stories of people living in Mumbai – the biggest financial center and the most populous city of India. Launched in January 2014, Humans of Bombay also utilizes various social media platforms to showcase its work and was inspired by Humans of New York (HoNY), a photo blog and book of portraits & interviews collected on the streets of New York City. In 2021, Karishma released a book titled Humans of Bombay: Ordinary People Extraordinary Stories. In 2022, she started an interview-based web series on YouTube called How The Hell Did I Do It? It features achievers who give an insight into their struggles and hardships.

Karishma Mehta Facts

Karishma first came across Humans of New York (HoNY), a photo blog that covers the stories of people living in New York City, in 2013. After she could not find a similar page for Mumbai, her hometown, she decided to create her own Facebook page – resulting in the birth of Humans of Bombay.

She started out with a couple of interns and would approach people on the streets of Mumbai, take their pictures, interview them, and post these stories on her platform. By 2018, Humans of Bombay had expanded to 6 members based in Mumbai.

Some freelancers based in other parts of India were also assisting this core group. Humans of Bombay went on to establish its own website and has even crowd-funded resources for some of the subjects of its stories.

In late September 2023, Karishma filed a lawsuit against a similar platform and competitor – People of India, accusing it of copyright infringement. Humans of Bombay claimed that People of India had copied its unique storytelling format and also used images and videos from its platform without permission.

While the latter charge can be contested based on specific evidence provided to a court of law, the former charge seemed a bit hypocritical. Many netizens felt that accusing someone of copying was quite rich coming from a platform whose own storytelling was inspired by Humans of New York.

They also pointed to an old video of Karishma wherein she stated that the idea for Humans of Bombay had hit her ‘out of the blue’ – giving an indication that she was not even willing to credit Humans of New York as her inspiration.

American author, photographer, and blogger Brandon Stanton (who started Humans of New York in November 2010) also attacked Humans of Bombay through a social media post, essentially calling out the platform’s blatant hypocrisy. Karishma responded by publishing a statement in which she accused Brandon of ‘jumping the gun’ on the matter without understanding the background of the case.

She later softened her stance and expressed gratitude to Humans of New York and Brandon for inspiring her and many others across the globe through their work. She, however, emphasized that Humans of Bombay‘s lawsuit against People of India was only related to intellectual property rights and had nothing to do with their storytelling format.
