Lawence Ostlere reporting from Marco Simone

One of The Independent’s team on the ground is following the second match. He sends this in:

“It is baking hot at Marco Simone right now where out on the back nine Ludvig Aberg and Viktor Hovland are dismantling Max Homa and Brian Harman in this second match, 3up through 11. Aberg started nervously but has settled brilliantly, making crucial putts on six and nine to whip up the home crowd.

“Aberg has just piped a drive down the 12th fairway, although Hovland has followed it with an approach that leaks right of the green. The Americans are 40 yards short after two shots after Harman’s tee shot found a fairway bunker.”

McIlroy in trouble as US win one back

Schauffele/Cantlay v McIlroy/Fleetwood 1UP (9)

Problems off the tee for McIlroy as goes way left, with Fleetwood forced to hack out sideways from the thick, thick rough. They are struggling from there and as McIlroy is unable to save par, the Euro duo concede the hole.

At the minute, this is America’s only realistic hope at the minute of a point this morning. You feel Schauffele and Cantlay have to win this match and hope someone in the top three can scramble a tie from somewhere.

Europe closing in on win in first match

Scheffler/Burns v Rahm/Hatton 4UP (12)

This first US pairing have not got going at all as Burns gets in trouble off the tee again. Scheffler can only hack out of the rough before Burns, again, disappoints with a poor wedge into the green which comes up short.

Rahm and Hatton, by contrast, are on the green in two and comfortably win the hole.

They are cruising to victory with just six holes remaining.

Hovland keeps Europe three up

Homa/Harmon v Hovland/Aberg – 3UP (11)

Homa pours in a putt on the par-four 11th but the Euros are in close after Aberg’s divine chip. Hovland takes care of the formalities and they remain three ahead as they head to the 12th tee.

US claw one back in third match

Fowler/Morikawa v Lowry/Straka 3UP (10)

The first mistake from Lowry as his drive finds the water on the tenth. It’s a struggle from there and the Euro team eventually concede the hole. A small opening perhaps for Fowler and Morikawa.

Europe go three up in top match

Scheffler/Burns v Rahm/Hatton 3UP (11)

The driveable par-four 11th is up next and it’s advantage Europe as Scheffler goes way left with his effort. Rahm finds the putting surface with his dive and from there, there’s only one winning team.

Hatton lags it up, Rahm taps it in and Europe lead by three with seven holes left.

Harmon misses out

Homa/Harmon v Hovland/Aberg – 3UP (10)

The American team need to start turning things around but are running out of holes. Harman misses a good look at birdie and him and Homa remain three down against the Scandinavian duo.

Cantlay in the water as Europe extend lead

Schauffele/Cantlay v McIlroy/Fleetwood 2UP (8)

There’s daylight now for Europe in all four matches as the bottom pair go two up. Cantlay with a huge unforced error into the eighth green which sails into the water. Europe were in a spot of bother themselves off the tee but a par is all they need to win the hole.

Straka and Lowry enjoying themselves

Fowler/Morikawa v Lowry/Straka 4UP (9)

Four up through nine. Just brutal ball-striking from Europe as Lowry pours in another birdie – their third in the row – as he and Straka go four up over the American team who have not been at the races so far this morning.

Rahm chips in to tie hole

Scheffler/Burns v Rahm/Hatton 2UP (10)

What on earth was in Jon Rahm’s cereal this morning? The Spaniard has been threatening the pin all morning long and chips in remarkable fashion with Europe in all sorts of trouble on the tenth.

Hatton’s drive had them in trouble before Rahm was forced to lay up but a superb chip-in means the US only have a putt to half the hole. Scheffler makes no mistake but that’s a huge boost for Europe who looked certain to lose that hole.
