He hosted his own late-night talk show called the Robert Klein Time on USA Network from 1986 until 1988.

Klein has released 4 comedy albums – A Child of the Fifties (1973), Mind Over Matter (1974), New Teeth (1975), and Let’s Not Make Love (1990). Out of them, the first 2 albums were nominated for a Grammy Award for ‘Best Comedy Album’ in 1975 and 1976 respectively.

He became a Tony Award nominee in 1979 after getting nominated in the ‘Best Actor in a Musical’ category for his remarkable performance in Neil Simon’s play, They’re Playing Our Song (1979).

Klein, who is a New York native, played the Mayor of New York City in Sharknado 2: The Second One (2014) and Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! (2015).

He was influenced by legendary comedians like Lenny Bruce, Rodney Dangerfield, and Jonathan Winters. Conversely, he has been a comedic influence to future generations of comedians including Bill Maher, Jay Leno, Richard Lewis, Billy Crystal, and Jerry Seinfeld. Lastly, Seinfeld stated that Klein was “The Beatles of Comedy to me.”

He hosted Saturday Night Live twice; the first time in Season 1 on November 15, 1975, and the second time in Season 3 on January 28, 1978.

In 1965, Klein joined the popular improvisational theater troupe called The Second City.
