During his college days, he started appearing in many short films and directed some of them including ‘Green,’ which won the Best Film award at the International Tamil Thoth Conference organised in Singapore in 2012. After completing his college studies, Ashok auditioned for some Tamil films including “Inidhu Inidhu” produced by Prakash Raj and “19th Step” produced by Bharat Bala but was rejected. He then began working as an assistant director with S. J. Surya and got a small role in Surya‘s movie “7aam Arivu” where he played Suriya’s friend. However, his scenes did not make it to the final cut. In 2012, his childhood photo was used to portray a younger version of Ajith Kumar’s character in Chakri Toleti’s Tamil film Billa 2. In the same year, he attempted to audition for a role in the Tamil film ‘Pizza’ but was not successful. Later, a Tamil film director named ‘Nalan Kumarasamy’ saw Ashok Selvan in a television commercial and offered him the role of Kesavan in his black comedy movie, Soodhu Kavvum (2013) alongside Vijay Sethupathi, Bobby Simha, and Sanchita Shetty. Reportedly, Soodhu Kavvum was a commercial hit.

In 2013, Ashok appeared in a psychological thriller film titled ‘Pizza II: Villa,’ which was directed by Deepan Chakravarthy. In this film, Ashok portrayed an English novel writer named Jebin M. Jose, and the story of the film revolved around mysterious happenings in a villa. Reportedly, to portray the role of a 30-year-old writer, he gained weight and grew a beard in two weeks. Soon after its release, ‘Pizza II: Villa’ received positive reviews from film critics and performed well at the box office. Some film critics praised Ashok’s performance as “outstanding.”

In 2014, Ashok worked in the Tamil film ‘Thegidi,’ which was a murder mystery directed by P. Ramesh. In the film, Ashok played the role of a detective named Vetri opposite Janani Iyer. In 2017, Ashok appeared in the film ‘Kootathil Oruthan,’ which focused on the love story of a middle bencher. His 2018 film ‘Sila Samayangalil,’ directed by Priyadharshan, was released on Netflix and made it to the final round at the Golden Globes Awards in the same year.
