Council warning as River Trent hits record high level

Pub owner drnks pint in waist-deep flood water

A council is warning residents close to an overflowing river at record high levels to leave their homes.

The River Trent has now reached a record peak at the Torksey Lock gauge in Nottinghamshire, with rising waters surpassing the historic levels set in the year 2000.

The warning has been issued to people living in Church Laneham, Cottam, Dunham-on-Trent, Fledborough High Marnham, Laneham, Low Marnham, Marton, Ragnall and Torksey.

Nottinghamshire council urged locals to consider staying with friends or family or seeking refuge at a rest centre in Newark.

It came as over 200 flood warnings remain in place as a yellow cold weather alert warning the elderly and vulnerable of sub-zero temperatures is expected to last the rest of next week.

As 3pm on Saturday, 207 flood warnings have been issued across England and Wales by the Environment Agency.

The UK Health Security Agency’s warning will be in place until 12pm on 12 January, with forecasters warning of icy conditions as temperatures plunge below freezing.

It comes as many parts of the country continue to grapple with the aftermath of Storm Henk, with 1,000 homes flooded across the country this week.

Jenrick blasts ‘biblical’ floods in Nottinghamshire

Robert Jenrick has said floods in his constituency are more “severe” than we have ever known.

Speaking to Sky News by a flooded Collingham, the former cabinet minister said: “If you see the area from above it really is biblical in terms of the level of flooding and damage that has happened.”

“We hope that it has peaked now in our area but it remains very high and there are so many properties that are affected and no immediate signs of it abating,” he added.

Jenrick said the government had put in place flood recovery grants for the floods occurring last year.

“My constituency covers dozens of villages along the River Trent and many of them do experience flooding on a regular basis.

“But it is happening more often and more severely than we have known.”
