England vs Australia LIVE: Ashes scorecard and second Test updates

Just Stop Oil crash Ashes as England’s Jonny Bairstow hauls protester off pitch

England resumed day three on 278-4, trailing Australia by 138 runs after a day of resurgence on Thursday. Depsite Nathan Lyon being confirmed to miss the remainder of the test match due to a calf injury the morning session has gone firmly Australia’s way.

Mitchell Starc had Ben Stokes caught in the slips off the second ball of the day before a short ball tactic proved especially effective. Harry Brook scuffed on to Pat Cummins at cover trying to counter-attack after making 50 and Jonny Bairstow lifted a drive to Cummins at mid-on.

Those three wickets leave England chasing the game at 311-7 with their bowlers trying to close the gap on Australia’s first innings total. How close can the hosts get?

Wicket! Stuart Broad lbw Travis Head 12 (24), England 325-9 (75.5)

Head gets Broad as well. After taking the blow to the head Broad looks to sweep the offspinner and misses the ball completely. It thunders into his pads and is going on to hit the stumps.

Wicket! Ollie Robinson ct Alex Carey b Travis Head 9 (10), England 324-8 (75.1)

Another one! Ollie Robinson doesn’t fancy hanging around. He comes down to the track to Travis Head, swings wildly and edges the ball through to Alex Carey who takes a great catch behind the stumps!

England 324-7 (75), Broad 12, Robinson 9, Head 0-16 (6)

Broad seems to be okay but he won’t fancy another blow to the head. Expect him to go after the next few short balls that come his way.

Travis Head is continuing though for a bit of spin.

England 324-7 (75), Broad 12, Robinson 9, Green 1-54 (9)

Oh hello! Cameron Green continues and Ollie Robinson whips a full ball over the leg side for a boundary! He’s then pushed back with a couple of bouncers before a pull shot brings another single.

Ouch! Another bouncer from Green rises sharply and pins Stuart Broad on the head. It looks as though this one snuck under the grill and clipped Broad on the jaw.

That’s a painful one and Broad needs a medical check before play can continue.

England 319-7 (74), Broad 12, Robinson 4, Head 0-16 (6)

With Nathan Lyon injured, Travis Head is brought on for a bit of spin. The new ball is due in six overs time so Pat Cummins is giving his seamers a bit of a rest.

Ollie Robinson and Stuart Broad decide the time is right for a bit of aggression. Nothing comes off the middle of the bat but the tail is beginning to wag for England.

Wicket! Jonny Bairstow ct Pat Cummins b Josh Hazlewood 16 (36), England 311-7 (72.2)

Gone! England are in trouble now. A full ball from Josh Hazlewood lights up Jonny Bairstow’s eyes and he goes for an expansive drive through the legside. He doesn’t connect well and floats the ball up to Pat Cummins at mid-on for an easy catch.

Drinks: That was an eventful first hour, and England, to the dismay of many pundits carried on where they left off the night before.

Ben Stokes was caught second ball of the day, admittedly not going for a bit shot, but just squared up trying to turn it into the leg side, and Cameron Green, as he has done so often, took another stunning catch.

Then it was Harry Brook, who brought up a first Ashes half century, but did not look comfortable against Mitchell Starc’s pace from the short ball, and had already been dropped on 25 while trying to play the pull shot.

Brook was out for 50 from 67, Starc had another, and England were left floundering slightly at 293 for six.

Trailing by 105 after the first hour, they will have to hope to put on the runs, with Jonny Bairstow supporting the bowlers.

England 311-6 (72), Broad 9, Bairstow 16, Green 1-49 (8)

Four for Broad! Cameron Green is introduced into the attack and gets his second delivery wrong. It’s wide and too full which allows Broad to smoke him over the offside for a boundary. The follow up is banged in and Broad guides it past gully to collect one and get off strike.

A single for Jonny Bairstow off the final delivery sees him keep the strike as drinks are brought onto the pitch. There’s no doubt that this first hour has gone Australia’s way though.

The wickets of Ben Stokes and Harry Brook are big moments in this innings.

England 305-6 (71), Broad 3, Bairstow 15, Hazlewood 1-69 (12)

The first change of bowling this morning sees Josh Hazlewood replace Pat Cummins at the Pavilion End. Cummins sets a more orthodox field for Jonny Bairstow with a couple of slips and men out in the deep on the legside for the occassional bouncer. Bairstow drives square of the wicket and collects one to bring up England’s 300.

They’re going to need a few more runs before they can think about winning this game.

Loose! Hazlewood pulls his length back at Stuart Broad who looks to hook him away. A top edge flies down to third man and brings a single after landing well short of the fielder.

Four runs! A much needed release for England comes from Bairstow who guides the ball wide of the two catchers in the slip cordon and away to the third man boundary for four.
