Erich von Stroheim was an Austrian-born American director, screenwriter, actor, stage artist, and producer who gained acclaim as a noted director of the silent era. Erich von Stroheim Facts

In 1937, he brought to life the character of Captain (later Major) von Rauffenstein (a German flying ace and member of the German nobility) in the 1937 war drama film La Grande Illusion.

Along with William Holden, Gloria Swanson, Nancy Olson, Fred Clark, Lloyd Gough, and Jack Webb, Erich von Stroheim co-starred as Max von Mayerling in the black comedy film noir Sunset Boulevard in 1950. This performance got him nominated for an Academy Award for “Best Supporting Actor” and a Golden Globe Award for “Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture”.

On February 8, 1960, Erich von Stroheim was posthumously awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6826 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California, United States.
