Iga Swiatek fought off a Karolina Muchova comeback to complete a hat-trick of French Open titles.

The 22-year-old Pole cemented her status as the best female player in the world, particularly on clay, with her third title in four years at Roland Garros.

But this was by some distance the hardest of her grand slam finals, with unseeded Czech Muchova battling back from a set and 3-0 down to force a decider.

Muchova twice led by a break in that but Swiatek refused to be beaten, eventually prevailing 6-2 5-7 6-4 after two hours and 46 minutes and crouching down on the clay in tears.

She is the first woman since Justine Henin in 2007 to successfully defend her title on the Paris clay and joins Naomi Osaka on four grand slam titles – veteran Venus Williams with seven is the only active player to hold more.

Swiatek joins Osaka and Monica Seles, meanwhile, as the only women in the open era to win each of their first four slam finals.

Swiatek: “First of all, congrats to Karolina. Since we first played I knew we would play these matches and finals. I was struck by tour variety and I really hope we are going to play more finals.

“Thank you to my family as well. So many people from Poland, I really feel the love.

“This is my favourite place on tour so thank you everybody. It’s always a pleasure to come back.”

Here’s Iga! The 22-year-old lifts the Suzanne-Lenglen trophy but the lid falls off!

She tries again, this time more successfully.

You would think she should have know how to do that after becoming the first player since 2007 to defend her title!

What an incredible tournament it’s been for Karolina Muchova. She fell outside of the world’s top 200 last season after being hit by injuries. She was told she may not be able to play again by doctors.

This was her first grand slam final and based on her performances in Roland Garros, it won’t be her last. The Czech should move to around the top-10 after her results in Paris. Would be a good bet for Wimbledon, too.

“Thank you. I’ll try to keep it short because it’s emotional. This is incredible. So close but so far, that’s what happens when you play one of the best. Congratulations Iga and your team.”

Muchova says an emotional thank you to her team.

“We’re going to come back,” she says.

Swiatek has now won all four of her grand slam finals – a feat only matched by Monica Seles and Naomi Osaka.

Swiatek is in tears at the end after being pushed harder than ever before in a grand slam final. The 22-year-old dug so deep to get over the line.

The victory adds to Swiatek’s recent dominance of the French Open. The Pole becomes the first player since Justine Henin in 2007 to win back-to-back Roland Garros titles, while Swiatek also becomes the youngest player to win four grand slam titles since Serena Williams.

Muchova double faults! The match did not deserve to end like that, but Swiatek is French Open champion once again! What a battle!

Muchova fought hard to make that an absoutely thrilling contest, but it brought the best out of Swiatek. Her steel in that third set to keep coming back was stunning.

Swiatek was break point down at 4-4 in the third but found an incredible level of tennis in the big moments.
