Swiatek pleased to reach the third round at the French Open
The French Open nears the end of its first week at Roland Garros as the third continues on Saturday with defending champion Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff looking to book their place in the last -16.
But Elena Rybakina has withdrawn from the tournament ahead of her match against Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo. The Rome champion looked to be leading the challenge to dethrone Swiatek in Paris but pulled out of the French Open due to illness in a shock announcement on Saturday morning.
The match of the day is a contest between last year’s finalist Coco Gauff and 16-year-old breakout star Mirra Andreeva, with Casper Ruud and Holger Rune also in action in the men’s draw.
Cameron Norrie’s campaign ended in disappointing fashion with a straight-sets loss to Lorenzo Musetti on Friday, while Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka continued to navigate off-court controversies at Roland Garros to advance to the fourth round.
Djokovic beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina amid the fall-out of his decision to write “Kosovo is the heart of Serbia” on the camera after his first-round victory, as the Serbian continued his bid to win a men’s record 23rd grand slam.
Sabalenka resumed her bid for consecutive grand slam titles with a straight-sets win against Kamilla Rakhimova. It came after she was confronted by a Ukrainian journalist following her second-round win and afterwards, Sabalenka did not undertake her usual media duties citing mental health concerns.

French Open 2023: Game, set and match!
Iga Swiatek 6-0 6-0 Xinyu Wang
DOUBLE BAGEL. Ruthless from Swiatek, who advances to the fourth round in just 51 minutes. Not a good day at the office for Wang, the world number 80, but that’s what we have come to expect from Swiatek. A crushing win.

French Open 2023: Game, set and match!
Coco Gauff 6-7 6-1 6-1 Mirra Andreeva
That’s an excellent turnaround from Coco Gauff, who ends Mirra Andreeva’s run at Roland Garros to return to the fourth round. The American was utterly dominant when her serve improved after losing the first-set tiebreak. Andreeva will be back – the Russian looks a special talent and played very well in the first hour of the match.
Gauff post-match: “Mirra, she’s super young and there’s a big future for her. I remember playing here at 16 and she has a lot to look forward to. And you guys will hopefully see … many matches between the two of us.”

French Open: Rafael Nadal undergoes successful surgery
Rafael Nadal is expected to be out for five more months following surgery on his left hip.
The 22-time grand slam champion underwent the procedure on Friday evening at a clinic in Barcelona.
Nadal’s team issued an update on Saturday saying the arthroscopic procedure on his left psoas tendon went well, with the damaged areas cleaned and reinforced, while an old labrum injury was also addressed.
The Spaniard, who turned 37 on Saturday, suffered the injury at the Australian Open in January and had expected to only be out for six to eight weeks.
But repeated efforts to rehabilitate it did not work and last month Nadal announced he would miss the French Open for the first time since 2004.

Set! Mirra Andreeva takes the tiebreak to move ahead against Coco Gauff! Gauff won a spectacular rally with a backhand winner to make the score 3-3 in the breaker, but then lost her way as Andreeva took the next three points.
It gives Andreeva three set points: and takes it on the third with a forehand drive volley! The 16-year-old received a warning after appearing to smack a ball as Gauff saved the first two, but the Russian closes it out!
