Hairy Biker’s Dave Myers funeral plans released with his last wish for guests – live

Hairy Bikers Dave Myers dies aged 66 after cancer battle

TV chef Dave Myers, one half of the Hairy Bikers, arranged his funeral plans before his death, and had one wish for guests, according to reports.

Myers died aged 66, two years after revealing he had been diagnosed with cancer. The news was shared by his co-star and close friend Si King on Thursday (29 February).

His plans included his coffin being carried out to “The Best is Yet To Come” by The Scorpions to “cheer everyone up”, he said in an interview from 2014.

Myers wanted guests to be served vodka martinis as they arrived “to get everyone loosened up”, and then have a recital of William Blake’s Songs of Innocence and Vaughan Williams’ Lark Ascending “to get them crying”.

Talking about how he wants people to reflect on his life, Myers told the MailOnline: “Just have a go and never limit your ambitions. Aim for the moon and you might just get there. As my dad used to say, ‘You’ve got to fill in your coupon, or you’ll never win the Pools’.”

Myers found fame alongside King, his best friend and work partner of 30 years, as part of the motorcycle-riding cooking duo. Together, they have toured the UK – and the world – in search of new recipes, and adventures.

They can currently be seen together in BBC series Hairy Bikers: Go West, which will continue this week.

In a tribute, King said: “I will miss him every day and the bond and friendship we shared over half a lifetime.”

“I wish you god’s speed brother; you are and will remain a beacon in this world. See you on the other side. Love ya.”

Hairy Bikers fans recall emotional life advice Dave Myers gave Si King ahead of death

In the wake of Myers’s death, fans are recalling a moving interaction between the Hairy Bikers in a recent episode of Go West, which aired earlier this month.

After candidly sharing details of his cancer diagnosis, Myers issued some advice to his friend, whom he met in 1996: “One thing I’d say is you have to live for today – don’t live for tomorrow because you don’t know what’s around the corner. It could be a double-decker bus. Live for today and don’t worry so much.

“I’ve always been a stupid worrier. Big stuff, I’m alright, but I worry about the daft stuff. But now I’m learning, I’m like, ‘Come on Myers get it in perspective!”

Myers then added: “But cancer – there’s nothing kicks you in the teeth like that.”

How Si King reacted to the news of Myers’s cancer diagnosis

In a June 2023 interview with The Times, King revealed that Myers immediately called him after learning of his cancer diagnosis.

“I was driving. I had to pull over,” he said, adding: “It’s so distressing. It’s very difficult to verbalise. There’s a sense of loss, but there’s also that sense of hope, you know, knowing my mate as I do.”

King called Myers “a scrapper” and “a fighter”, adding: “But there were certain points that I thought, ‘Where’s it going to go? What is happening to my friend?’”

King went on: “And it’s funny, you know, when you see somebody you love so much in so much distress, it’s very hard to know what to do. My character and personality is, naturally, I just want to fix it. I just want to fix it. I get very distressed when I can’t.”

Best mates: Dave Myers and Si King’s friendship history

The Hairy Bikers met on the set of TV drama The Gambling Man in 1995 and formed a close personal and professional relationship.

“At lunch most of the crew were ordering salads and mineral water at the local pub, while I was having a curry and two pints of larger,” King told The Independent.

“When Dave came in he took one look at my lunch and went, ‘I’ll have what he’s having!’ Pretty quickly we discovered that we both loved eating, drinking and motorcycling.”
