Humphrey Bogart Facts
He decided to name his daughter ‘Leslie’ as a show of gratitude towards Leslie Howard, who directed him in the breakout film, The Petrified Forest (1936). Similarly, his son Steve was named after his character’s nickname in To Have and Have Not (1944).
During the making of Beat the Devil (1953), Bogart experienced a serious automobile accident wherein he lost several of his teeth. This affected his ability to speak clearly and meant that his dialogues would require dubbing, which was eventually done by the still-unknown Peter Sellers.
He was the founding member and original leader of the Hollywood Rat Pack, which was made infamous by Frank Sinatra.
In 1999, Bogart was ranked #1 on the American Film Institute‘s list of the ’50 Greatest Screen Legends’.
He was a distant relative of the late Princess Diana, Princess of Wales.
His iconic role as Rick Blaine in Casablanca (1942) was ranked at the 19th spot on Premiere Magazine‘s list of ‘100 Greatest Movie Characters of All Time’ in 2004. However, Bogart considered the movie to be his worst, as reported by Orson Welles.
Among his closest friends was the director John Huston. The two collaborated on several acclaimed films such as The Maltese Falcon (1941), The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948), The African Queen (1951), Key Largo (1948), etc.
His filmography includes classic films such as Casablanca (1942), which was listed as the top-rated film on American Film Institute‘s list of ‘100 Years….100 Passions’ in 2002. Additionally, 4 of his other films also make an appearance on the list. They are as follows: – The African Queen (1951) at #14, Dark Victory (1939) at #32, Sabrina (1954) at #54, and To Have and Have Not (1944) at #60.
