Many sources claimed that the couple fled the country, to the Maldives, in the Sri Lankan Air Force’s Antonov An-32 aircraft. From the Maldives, the couple went to Singapore, and from there, the couple moved to Thailand. In August 2022, many reports surfaced that claimed that Ioma and Gotabaya might return to Sri Lanka in the first week of September as they were allotted a VISA for Thailand for 90 days only. The media also reported that another reason for their return could be the unsustainable amount of money required to live in a costly place like Thailand with 24/7 VVIP security around them.
