Isaac Hayes studied at Manassas High School in Memphis, Tennessee but eventually dropped out of high school. However, as a result of encouragement from his former teachers, he completed his diploma when he was 21 years old.
He received many music scholarships from colleges and universities after graduating from high school but he declined them all because he had to provide for his family. Subsequently, he started working at a meat-packing plant in Memphis by day and playing at nightclubs and juke joints several evenings a week in Memphis and nearby northern Mississippi.
