Jugnu Walia is an Indian gangster and Samajwadi Party (SP) member who is well-known for his close association with the jailed gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari. He is a notorious gangster wanted in numerous murder and extortion cases in Uttar Pradesh. He hit the headlines in May 2023 after he was arrested by the Punjab Police in Mohali.

Jugnu Walia was born as Harvinder Singh Walia on 11 November in Alambagh, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. His zodiac sign is Scorpio. Jugnu completed his tenth standard at City Montessori School (CMS) in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. He completed his graduation at the University of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. Before stepping into the world of crime, Jugnu worked as a member of the Samajwadi Party (SP).

His father, Gurdyal Singh Walia, is a businessman, who has served as the chairman of the Lucknow Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee, president of Gurudwara Shri Guru Singh Sabha Chander Nagar Lucknow, and chairman of Lucknow Transport Nagar Vyapar Mandal. He has two elder sisters.

Involvement in criminal activities
Jugnu Walia’s stature as a gangster in Uttar Pradesh increased manifolds after he came into contact with Mukhtar Ansari, the jailed politician. As his stature increased, he began looking after Mukhtar’s criminal empire and started conducting underground business in his name.

In 2005, he was charge-sheeted by the Uttar Pradesh police for the murder of Swaroop Singh, a UP-based businessman. In March 2011, he was arrested by the UP police for attempting to murder Devendra Singh Arora. He was arrested and jailed in 2019 by the UP police after he shot dead a cloth merchant named Amanpreet Singh in January after Amanpreet failed to pay Jugnu the ransom he demanded. Jugnu, however, was later granted bail by the Allahabad High Court. In October 2021, while on bail, he allegedly murdered a restaurant owner named Jaswinder Singh alias Romi in the Chandernagar area of Alambagh, Lucknow. Later the cops issued many warrants against him to appear before a court in UP. In February 2022, upon failing to respond to the warrants against him, Jugnu was declared an absconder and the cops, in March 2022, seized his assets and properties worth crores of rupees. The cops also placed a reward of Rs.1 lacs on him. While giving an interview, a high-ranking UP police officer said,
Walia was declared an absconder on February 1. However, he did not surrender. He is unlikely to surrender before the court and his act is in violation of the provisions of Section 82 of the CrPC (being declared an absconder). An FIR under the charges of non-attendance in obedience to an order from a public servant was also lodged against him.”
On the evening of 6 May 2023, the Punjab Police Anti-Gangster Task Force nabbed Jugnu Walia in Mohali, Punjab. According to the police officials, they recovered a .32 calibre pistol, six rounds of ammunition, a Skoda car, two walkie-talkie sets, and foreign currency worth lakhs of rupees. Following his arrest, an FIR under Sections 25 (7,8) of the Arms Act and Section 120B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered by the police. Talking about Jugnu’s arrest, the DGP of Punjab Police, in a press conference said,
The accused Jugnu Walia, who is a history-sheeter and facing a number of criminal cases pertaining to murder, attempt to murder, and extortion was “most-wanted” by Uttar Pradesh (UP) police in a number of criminal cases and had a reward of ₹1 lakh on his arrest by the UP government.”

Jugnu Walia was later handed over to the Special Task Force (STF) of the UP police. As of May 2023, Jugnu has more than twelve cases registered against him in UP.
