Karl Malden was an American actor, voice actor, stage artist, and director who rose to acclaim with his work in movies such as A Streetcar Named Desire, Baby Doll, One-Eyed Jacks, On the Waterfront, Gypsy, Pollyanna, How the West Was Won, and Patton.   • He was 22 when he changed his name from Mladen Sekulovich to Karl Malden. It was director Elia Kazan who had urged him to do so. However, Karl later regretted changing his name.
  • During the Second World War, Karl Malden served as a noncommissioned officer in the 8th Air Force of the United States Army Air Corps. He was discharged in 1946 as a Sergeant and was awarded the Air Force Presidential Unit Citation, the American Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.
  • He served as the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) from 1989 to 1992.
  • Written with his daughter Carla, his autobiography titled When Do I Start? was published in 1997.
