Khyali Saharan is an Indian comedian and politician, who is a member of the Aam Aadmi Party. He came into the limelight after participating in the reality stand-up comedy series The Great Indian Laughter Challenge Season 2 which aired on STAR One.

Khyali Saharan was born on Sunday, 1 January 1978 (age 45 years; as of 2023) in 18 SPD Badopal village in Hanumangarh district of Rajasthan. His zodiac sign is Capricorn. He did his schooling till class 5 at a school in his village. He then attended a school in a nearby village to pursue class 10. While he was in class 10, he failed thrice and decided to quit his studies. Thereafter, he moved to Sri Ganganagar in search of work. Saharan was good at acting, singing, mimicking, and dancing since childhood.

Career

While in Sri Ganganagar, Khyali worked as a guard at a swimming pool for around 5-6 months. Later, he started working at JCT Mills in Sri Ganganagar. While working at the cloth mill, Khyali met with an accident and severely injured his right hand. He was admitted at a hospital for around 13 months, where he went through various surgeries. After getting his hand treated, Khyali joined the cloth mill again and worked there for around 5 years. Meanwhile, he also worked part-time at Ganesh Cinema in Sri Ganganagar, selling tickets outside the cinema. Soon, he associated himself with a theatre group, and did his first play ‘Poster.’ Working with the group, Saharan subsequently started doing drama road shows and stage shows in various cities like Jaipur and Bikaner. Once, while he was performing in a play in Jaipur, he received an opportunity to attend an acting workshop in Chandigarh. He then decided to relocate to Chandigarh, where he started anchoring at various stage shows.

His comedy skills attracted various organisers and he went on to anchor for stage shows of various renowned singers like Gurdas Maan, Jazzy B, Hans Raj Hans, Mika Singh, and Daler Mehndi. Khayali used to earn Rs. 2000 to Rs. 2500 for a show. He worked as an anchor for around 5 years, and in December 2005 appeared for the auditions of the reality TV stand-up comedy show The Great Indian Challenge Season 2 (aired on STAR One) and got selected. He was the only contestant on the show to be selected from northern India. While Rauf Lala emerged as the winner of the show, Khyali Saharan appeared as its second runner-up. During the show, Khyali was offered a comic role in the Bollywood film ‘Journey Bombay to Goa: Laughter Unlimited’ (2007). He then played comic roles in several Bollywood films like Singh is King (2008), Meri Padosan (2009), Muskurake Dekh Zara (2010), Bhavnao Ko Samjho (2010), and Marudhar Mharo Ghar (2014).

He has also worked in various Punjabi films like Mukhtiar Chadha (2015), JATT vs IELTS (2018), Ult Pult (2020), and Kulche Chole (2022). He has also participated in various other comedy shows like Comedy Circus (aired on Sony channel), Mazak Mazak Mein (aired on Life Ok), MAD in India (aired on Star Plus), and SAB TV Jokes.

On 8 August 2020, Khyali created a YouTube channel named Khyali Comedy on which he posts his comedy videos. The channel has more than 389k subscribers on it. He is very popular for playing the role of Roop Nath in his videos.

In April 2022, Khyali Saharan entered into politics by joining the Aam Aadmi Party. Later, he was made the divisional in-charge of AAP Bikaner.

Philanthropy

Besides being a comedian and a politician, Khayali Saharan is also an active philanthropist. In 2011, Saharan with around 20 bighas of land and Rs. 1.25 crores established Oasis Sainik School in his village 18 SPD Badopal, Hanumangarh, Rajasthan, to prepare boys academically, physically and mentally for entry into the National Defense Academy. He is one of the trustees of the school. Khyali often organises free camps for physically disabled persons.

Controversy

Booked for Rape

On 14 March 2023, a 25-year-old woman filed a complaint against Khyali Saharan at Mansarovar police station in Jaipur, accusing him of raping her in a hotel room in the Mansarovar area of Jaipur on the pretext of helping her get a job. Following the complaint, a case was registered against Khyali under Section 376 (punishment for sexual assault) of the Indian Penal Code. Apparently, the incident took place on 13 March 2023. According to the police, Khyali had booked two rooms in a hotel, one for himself and another for two women, who came in contact with Khayali a month ago, seeking help for a job. In the evening Khayali called the women into his room and offered them beer. On their refusal, he forcibly asked the women to drink beer and he also started consuming it. Later, when one of the women left the room, he allegedly raped the other women in a drunk state.
