Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is an Indian woman businessman, technocrat, investigator and also the founder and president of ‘Biocon Limited’, a leading biotechnology institute in Bangalore. She is also the author of ‘The Story of Bear’. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw started making ‘Enzyme’ for ‘Liquor Fermentation’ in 1978 in a small shed in Kormangala near Bangalore. In their project, Ireland’s partner company Biocon Chemicals sold its shares to Unilever after a few days and Unilever became Kiran Mazumdar’s new partner. But this partnership became a foothold for Kiran Mazumdar. Unilever did not allow them to do research work on any other product. Due to which, Biocon Limited remained a ‘One Product’ Company for 25 years. Kiran Mazumdar’s relationship with Unilever ended in the year 1998 and this year was also the ‘Turning Year’ of his life. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw was born on March 23, 1953 in Bengaluru (Karnataka). She completed her schooling in 1968 from Bishop Cotton Girls High School, Bangalore. He completed his BSc (Zoology Hons) degree from Bangalore University in the year 1973. After this, he received higher education in the year 1975 from Ballarat College, Melbourne University (Australia) on the subject of ‘Molting and Brewing’. Biocon’s IPO subscribed over 32 times and closed with a market value of $ 1.11 billion on the first day, becoming the second company in India to cross the $ 1 billion mark on the first day of listing.
