Her family lost almost all of their money and property in the wake of the Wall Street Crash of 1929. Despite that, Leora and her siblings were able to receive a thorough education as part of those funds had already been set aside in trust funds for the education of the children.

Leora Dana made her stage debut in London in 1947. The following year, she debuted on Broadway in a production of The Madwoman of Chaillot. This role earned her the Clarence Derwent Award.

She made her first film appearance as Lovely Girl in the 1954 Eastmancolor adventure film Valley of the Kings, starring Robert Taylor, Eleanor Parker, and Samia Gamal. However, Leora Dana’s role went uncredited.

For her performance in The Last of Mrs. Lincoln, she won the Tony Award for “Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play” in 1973.

Leora Dana portrayed the character of Abigail Smith Adams (age 44–74) (the wife and closest advisor of diplomat John Adams as well as the mother of politician and diplomat John Quincy Adams) in the 13-episode drama miniseries The Adams Chronicles in 1976.

In 1977, she was cast as Mrs. Gold in the 6-part television miniseries Seventh Avenue. The series is based on the 1967 Norman Bogner novel of the same name.

Leora Dana played the role of Sylvie Kosloff in the NBC soap opera Another World from 1979 to 1980.

For her last film role, she was seen as Joyce in the science fiction comedy-drama film Nothing Lasts Forever in 1984. The film stars Zach Galligan, Lauren Tom, Mort Sahl, Anita Ellis, Sam Jaffe, Bill Murray, Imogene Coca, Dan Aykroyd, Eddie Fisher, Rosemary De Angelis, Apollonia van Ravenstein, Paul Rogers, and Calvert DeForest.
