Leslie Howard was an English actor, stage artist, narrator, director, and producer who became one of the biggest box-office draws and movie idols of the 1930s. He worked in both Britain and Hollywood and his film credits include The Lackey and the Lady, Never the Twain Shall Meet, A Free Soul, Five and Ten, Secrets, Service for Ladies, Devotion, Smilin’ Through, The Animal Kingdom, Of Human Bondage, The Lady Is Willing, British Agent, Romeo and Juliet, Gone with the Wind, The Petrified Forest, The First of the Few, It’s Love I’m After, and Pygmalion. In 1981, Leslie Howard was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame.

Leslie Howard Facts

His family anglicized its name to “Stainer”, following the example of many others around the time of the First World War. Nevertheless, Howard’s name remained “Steiner” in official documents, such as his military records.

When the First World War began, he was a 21-year-old bank clerk in Dulwich. He then voluntarily enlisted (under the name “Leslie Howard Steiner”) as a Private with the British Army’s Inns of Court Officer Training Corps in London in September 1914.

Leslie Howard received a commission as a subaltern with the 3/1st Northamptonshire Yeomanry in February 1915 and trained in England until May 19, 1916, when he resigned his commission. He was medically discharged from the British Army with neurasthenia.

He gave public notice in The London Gazette in March 1920 that he had changed his surname and would thereafter be known as “Leslie Howard” instead of “Leslie Howard Steiner”.
