  • He changed his German given name “Carl” to “Louis Calhern” because of the anti-German sentiment during World War I. The name “Louis Calhern” is an amalgamation of his hometown of St. Louis and his first and middle names, Carl and Henry (Calhern).
  • In 1950, he portrayed the character of Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. (an American jurist who served as an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1902 to 1932) in the biographical film The Magnificent Yankee. For this role, Louis Calhern was nominated for an Academy Award in the “Best Actor in a Leading Role” category.
