Marlene Dietrich Facts
At the age of 11, she combined together her first name “Marie” and her nickname “Lene” to form her adopted name “Marlene.”
She made her debut film appearance in Im Schatten des Glücks in 1919. However, her role was uncredited. Later, in 1923, Marlene was cast in her debut credited role as Kathrin in The Little Napoleon.
In her teenage years, Marlene developed an interest in theater and poetry.
Her mother was from an affluent Berlin family who owned a jewelry and clock-making firm.
She made her debut on stage as a chorus girl on tour with Guido Thielscher’s Girl-Kabarett vaudeville-style entertainments and in Rudolf Nelson revues in Berlin.
Marlene’s step-father Eduard von Losch, was her biological father’s best friend. Eduard courted her mother Wilhelmina and tied the knot with her in 1914. Later, he passed away in July 1916 from injuries sustained during the First World War.
A wrist injury ended her passion for playing the violin for a long time until later, in 1922 when she got her first job as a violinist in a pit orchestra for silent films at a Berlin cinema but asked to leave just four weeks after joining.
Marlene was fluent in German, English, and French.
Dietrich released her debut studio album titled Overseas in 1951. From there, she came out with two other albums including Die neue Marlene and Marlene singt Berlin, Berlin.
She was named the ninth-greatest female star of classic Hollywood cinema by the American Film Institute in 1999.
In order to keep her mouth muscles tight she would suck on lemon wedges between takes.
