Matisse Thybulle is an American professional basketball player who played college basketball for the Washington Huskies. During the first round of the 2019 NBA draft, he was selected by the Boston Celtics but was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers the next day. He has played for the Portland Trail Blazers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and was named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 2021 and 2022. In addition to that, he was a member of the Australian national team at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

Matisse Thybulle Facts

His name is inspired by the French artist Henri Matisse.

His family shifted to Sydney, Australia when he was 2 years old and they lived there for around 7 years. They resided in Sydney’s North Shore.

During his time in Australia, Matisse Thybulle focused more on swimming than basketball as lifeguards “were a really big deal” there.

In 2005, his family relocated to the United States and settled in Sammamish, Washington, a suburb east of Seattle.

During his time at Eastside Catholic, ESPN ranked him as a 3-star and Scout.com ranked him as a 4-star recruit.

On July 11, 2020, Matisse Thybulle started posting a series of vlog-style YouTube videos showcasing the 2020 NBA Bubble at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida.

Matisse Thybulle was named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in his 2nd season in 2020–21.

During his stint with the Australian Boomers at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, he helped the team obtain its first-ever Olympic medal in men’s basketball after beating Slovenia in the bronze medal game.

It was revealed on April 10, 2022, that Thybulle was not fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and that made him ineligible to play in Canada during the 76ers opening round of the NBA playoffs against the Toronto Raptors. He told The Athletic’s Rich Hofmann, “Yeah, I’m not fully vaccinated,” adding, “This was a decision I made a long time ago. I thought a lot about what I would say here. Essentially I made this choice and I thought I can keep it to myself, I can keep it private, but people are always going to wonder why.” He later said that he was brought up in a “holistic household” with “Chinese medicine and naturopathic doctors”. He had received the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine but did not continue on for the following shot.

Matisse Thybulle has American and Australian citizenship.

On February 13, 2023, he made his debut with Portland Trail Blazers recording 14 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 blocks in a 127–115 win over the Los Angeles Lakers.
