For some time, he resided in Dunwoody, Georgia, as his father attended graduate school at the University of Georgia. After that, his family shifted to Dallas, Texas.
During his time at Highland Park High School, Matthew Stafford was coached by Randy Allen and was widely considered to be one of the best high school quarterbacks in the United States in the Class of 2006 and was ranked ahead of Tim Tebow.
He led Highland Park Scots to a perfect 15–0 record and won the UIL 4A Division I State Championship in 2005.
In 2005, he was named to the Parade All-America Team and the USA Today Pre-Season Super 25. The same year, he also won the MVP and Best Arm awards at the EA Sports Elite 11 Quarterback Camp as well as was named the 2005 EA Sports National Player of the Year.
Rivals.com regarded Matthew Stafford as a five-star recruit and he was listed as the No. 1 pro-style quarterback prospect in the class of 2006.
Even before he started a game at the collegiate level, analyst Mel Kiper Jr. correctly predicted that Stafford would eventually become the first pick in the NFL Draft.
