Montgomery Clift was an American actor whose stellar performance in such movies as Red River (1948), The Search (1948), A Place in the Sun (1951), From Here to Eternity (1953), etc. made him one of the most sought-after Hollywood actors of the 1950s. Unfortunately, a near-fatal car accident halted his meteoric rise in Hollywood.   • He was considered one of Hollywood’s original method actors along with Marlon Brando and James Dean.
  • Clift was among the few actors who received a ‘Best Actor’ oscar nomination for their debut film performance, which he earned for The Search (1948). Other actors who achieved the same feat are Orson Welles, James Dean, Lawrence Tibbett, Paul Muni, and Alan Arkin.
  • He has been referenced in the song Monty Got a Raw Deal (1992) by R.E.M., The Right Profile (1979) by The Clash, etc.
  • On May 12, 1956, Clift was involved in an almost-fatal car crash after leaving a dinner party at Elizabeth Taylor’s house. He apparently fell asleep behind the wheel and veered off one of the twisting hairpin turns, crashing badly into a telephone pole and the surrounding cliffside. He was found conscious yet bleeding by Taylor, who pulled out a hanging tooth from his tongue as it was cutting off his oxygen.
  • He sustained multiple injuries including a concussion, broken nose, broken jaw, fractured cheekbones, fractured sinuses, in addition to numerous facial lacerations. Furthermore, he underwent extensive plastic surgery, which altered his appearance significantly.
  • Soon after, Clift began heavily abusing alcohol and pills for pain relief to the extent that the acting teacher Robert Lewis described his post-accident career as the ‘longest suicide in Hollywood history’.
  • The blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe once described him as “the only person I know who is in worse shape than I am”.
  • After his accident and surgery, Clift could only be filmed from the right side of his face as his left side was almost completely immobile.
