Wiki/Biography

Quazi Nurul Hasan Sohan was born on 21 November 1993 in Maheshwerpara, Khulna, Bangladesh. He studied at Government Majid Memorial City College and Khulna Northern University. He played cricket at the domestic level for many years before debuting in the national team at the age of 23 years.

Career

Domestic Cricket

He played his first List A match in 2010 and played his first domestic match in 2011. He has played for Khulna Division, Sylhet Sixers. He played for 3 years in Domestic cricket and played in the Under-19 World cup 2010 and Under-19 World cup 2012. He made 489 runs in the National Cricket League in the 2013-14 season at an average of 81.50 including 2 centuries. In the 2016 season, he scored more than 500 runs including a century. He played for Bangladesh A team. He played for Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club in the Dhaka Premier League and helped them win the title in 2022. He played for Sylhet Super Stars in the Bangladesh Premier League 2015 and for Chattogram Challengers in the Bangladesh Premier League 2019-20.

Test Debut

He played his debut test match on 20 January 2017 against New Zealand at Hagley Oval, Christchurch, New Zealand.

ODI Debut

He played his debut ODI match on 29 December 2016 against New Zealand at Saxton Oval, Nelson, New Zealand.

T20I Debut

He played his debut T20I match on 15 January 2016 against Zimbabwe at  Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium, Khulna, Bangladesh.

Test

He has played against New Zealand, West Indies, and Pakistan. He scored 64 runs in a test match against West Indies. In a test match against West Indies on 12 July 2018, he was out on a golden duck or king pair. In the same test match, he became the first Bangladeshi wicketkeeper to stump 3 batsmen in an innings and a match.
ODI
He has played against New Zealand, West Indies, and Zimbabwe. He played 2 ODIs against New Zealand in 2016 and scored 64 runs. In 2021, he played in a single ODI against Zimbabwe and scored 45 runs not out in 39 balls.

T20I

He has played against all major T20-playing nations including India, West Indies, New Zealand, Pakistan, Australia, Sri Lanka and England. On 20 January 2016, he scored 30 runs not out off 17 balls against Zimbabwe at a strike rate of 176.47 to guide his country to a win. In ICC T20 World Cup 2021 held in the United Arab Emirates, he scored 16 runs in 5 matches at a strike rate of 80.77. In the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 held in Australia, he scored 41 runs in 5 matches at a strike rate of  97.62.
Captaincy
On 22 July 2022, he was appointed as the captain of the Bangladesh T20 team. He played series against 2-match series against Zimbabwe, 2-match series against the United Arab Emirates and one match against Pakistan.

Controversies

Verbal Spat with Thisara Perera in the 2018 Nidahas Tri-Series

During the final over of the match against Sri Lanka in the 2018 Nidahas Tri-Series, Nurul Hasan was a reserve player and he was sent to the field to pass a message to the batsman. He had an ugly spat with Sri Lankan captain Thisara Perera and pointed a finger at him. He was fined 25 percent of his match fee and given 1 demerit point for breaching Level 1 of the ICC code of conduct. Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan was also fined 25 percent match fee with 1 demerit point. ICC released a statement regarding the incident,
“Shakib was found to have breached Article 2.1.1 of the ICC code of conduct for players and player support personnel, which relates to conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game, while Nurul was found guilty of violating Article 2.1.2, which deals with conduct that brings the game into disrepute.”

Accusing Virat Kohli of Fake Fielding in ICC T20 World Cup 2022

In the match against India in ICC T20 World Cup 2022, he accused Indian cricketer Virat Kohli of fake fielding. Bangladesh lost the match by 5 runs and he said that the umpires should have penalized India 5 runs and awarded 5 runs to them. He said in the post-match press session,
“Certainly, the field was wet and it had an impact and everyone saw that and eventually, what I felt is that when we were talking there was a fake throw and it could have been a five-run penalty and that could have gone our way, but unfortunately, even that didn’t come.”

Facts/Trivia

  • Nurul Hasan cites Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the reason behind the improvement in his wicketkeeping skills. He said about Dhoni. He said that he follows Dhoni’s logic to see the ball till the last moment.
  • He was selected for the Bangladesh team for Champions Trophy 2015; however, he did not play in any match and had to wait till 2016 to make his debut.
