During his time at the University College, Oxford, he played cricket and made six first-class appearances for the university and one for a combined Oxford and Cambridge side against the 1987 Pakistani touring team. Subsequently, he was awarded a cricket Blue at Oxford.

For coverage of the 2002 Gujarat riots, Rajdeep Sardesai was awarded the International Broadcasters Award.

In 2006, he became a recipient of the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism award.

Rajdeep Sardesai was awarded Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2008.

He was allegedly heckled by a group of Indians in Madison Square in New York on September 30, 2014, and became a victim of physical assault. Although he claimed that he was jostled by the crowd, the eyewitnesses denied the allegations and went on to claim that Rajdeep “began the physical assault”.

He was taken off television for two weeks in January 2021 by India Today while his monthly salary was also cut for alleging in a retracted tweet that Navreet Singh was killed in a police shooting during the 2020–2021 Indian farmers’ protest. Rajdeep Sardesai was booked for sedition over the Republic Day violence and the FIR stated that they shared misinformed news and ‘instigated violence’ on January 26. Many other journalists and politicians who reported about the 2021 Farmers’ Republic Day parade were charged with sedition and the guild termed the FIRs as an “attempt to intimidate, harass, browbeat and stifle the media”.
