Stewart Granger Facts

He became an overnight sensation in England following his starring role as the acid-tongued Peter Rokeby in the period melodrama, The Man in Grey (1943).

Upon joining Hollywood, he adopted the stage name Stewart Granger to avoid getting mistaken for the American actor, James Stewart.

He was a chain smoker for nearly 40 years and smoked as much as 60 cigarettes a day. Owing to this, he was mistakenly diagnosed with lung cancer in 1980, which actually turned out to be tuberculosis.

Stewart had worked in more than 60 films throughout his long, illustrious career. He once famously said that he couldn’t stand a single one of his movies except Saraband for Dead Lovers (1948), Young Bess (1953), and Waterloo Road (1945).

He published his autobiography titled Sparks Fly Upward in 1981.

Granger formed a lifelong friendship with fellow English actor, Michael Wilding. The two starred in such films as Secret Mission (1942), Convoy (1940), etc.
