Storm Gerrit: ‘Tornado’ hits Manchester as UK weather travel chaos continues – live

File: Snow blankets Scottish towns as Met Office issues two weather warnings

A suspected tornado has damaged roofs and smashed windows as a rare supercell thunderstorm passed over Greater Manchester overnight during Storm Gerrit.

A major incident has been declared in Tameside, with 100 properties reportedly damaged by the powerful storm and debris littered across the area. The Met Office says it was likely a tornado.

Travel chaos continues for a second day on Thursday, with some ferries, trains and planes already cancelled as the transport networks seek to recover from the flooding and damage which brought trains across much of Scotland and parts of England to a standstill on Wednesday.

British Airways has already cancelled more than 20 flights to and from Heathrow on Thursday due to Storm Gerrit, while ferries to the Hebrides, France and Isle of Wight warning of delays and cancellations.

Amid a morning inspection of the damage, Scotrail also announced on Thursday that many major rail lines remained closed across the country, including between Aberdeen and Edinburgh, Glasgow to Oban, and Edinburgh to Dundee.

More than 14,000 homes remain without power

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Distribution said that as of 7.45am on Thursday supplies had been restored to just over 31,500 homes, while just over 14,000 remained without power.

Director of corporate affairs Graeme Keddie told BBC Radio Scotland: “Many of those are in the north-east and Shetland which saw later impact into yesterday afternoon and evening, and that will be very much our priority through the course of today.

“One of the main impacts we’ve seen is around access to faults – so blocked roads, flooding in fields, and issues with snow.

“We’re very hopeful that that will ease today but that has meant our teams on the ground have been saying that [in] the time it’d take to fix two or three faults they have only been able to fix one, but we are hopeful of further progress today as weather conditions have eased.”

Asked how long it will be before power is restored to all customers in Scotland, he said: “Based on the impact, particularly in the north-east, we do believe that some customers, particularly in areas that have been impacted heavily or rural locations, will be into Friday.”
