  • He was brought up in Kent.
  • Greenstreet began his acting career in 1902, in a Sherlock Holmes stage production at the Marina Theatre, Ramsgate, Kent.
  • Sydney was 18 years old when he decided to leave home to make his fortune as a Ceylon tea planter. However, an unexpected drought forced him to pull out of business. After this, he started working as a manager at a brewery and in order to escape boredom, he also took acting lessons.
  • He made his acting debut at the age of 61 as Kasper Gutman in The Maltese Falcon in 1941, starring Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Gladys George, Peter Lorre, Barton MacLane, and Lee Patrick. Sydney was nominated for an Academy Award for “Best Supporting Actor”. At the time of his debut film appearance, he weighed 300 lbs.
  • Sydney portrayed the character of American military commander Lt. Gen. Winfield Scott in They Died with Their Boots On in 1941.
  • His film credits include Background to Danger (1943), Passage to Marseille (1944), The Mask of Dimitrios (1944), The Conspirators (1944) Hollywood Canteen (1944), Conflict (1945), Three Strangers (1946) and The Verdict (1946).
  • Right through his acting career, Sydney suffered from diabetes. He also developed Bright’s disease, which is a kidney disorder. Five years after he gave up acting Sydney passed away in 1954, due to complications relating to his disease.
  • Sydney was interred at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, California, in the Utility Columbarium area of the Great Mausoleum, which is inaccessible to the public.
