Wimbledon: Highlights from day eight at tennis tournament
The Wimbledon quarter-finals begin today as Novak Djokovic continues his bid for an eighth title while Iga Swiatek faces Elina Svitolina
Djokovic is in action for the third day in a row after his fourth-round match against Hubert Hurkacz was suspended due to the Wimbledon curfew on Sunday night. The 36-year-old, who questioned Wimbledon’s scheduling after eventually beating Hurkacz on Monday, plays seventh seed Andrey Rublev as he looks for his 33rd consecutive win at the Championships.
World No 1 Swiatek features in the earlier match on Centre Court, but the home crowd are likely to support the Ukrainian wildcard Svitolina after her stunning victory over Victoria Azarenka. Although the three-set thriller was overshadowed by Azarenka being booed off the court, Svitolina is enjoying an inspired run at the All England Club but faces a tough test in Swiatek.
Last night, Carlos Alcaraz battled past former runner-up Matteo Berrettini, setting up a match with Holger Rune. Defending champion Elena Rybakina will face Ons Jabeur in the women’s quarter-finals in a rematch of last year’s final, after the Tunisian beat Petra Kvitova in straight sets.

*Swiatek 5-7 7-6 1-1 Svitolina – Svitolina holds serve
Some really impressive hitting from Svitolina to win the crucial point at 30-30 as she lets out a roar to her box. But once again, her second serve is punished from Swiatek with a superb in-to-out forehand to send us to deuce.
Svitolina prevails, though, and holds serve with her second game point. We’re back to even in the third set.

Swiatek 5-7 7-6 Svitolina – Swiatek fights back to win second set
When it’s good, it’s so good from Swiatek as she fires into the corners with another pinpoint forehand. There have been too many errors mixed in but there’s not one this time as another sweeping forehand moves into the lead at 6-5 in this tie-break.
Set point for Swiatek…and it’s long from Svitolina! She was 4-1 up at one point but it’s the Ukrainian who falters on this occasion and the number one seed lets out a roar as she gets herself firmly back into his encounter.
One set all. Decider incoming…

Swiatek 5-7 6-6 Svitolina – Slender lead for Svitolina
Swiatek with some good striking to bring it back to 4-3 with her two serves but Svitolina now with a huge opportunity on serve.
The first serve is out and once again, that second serve is punished by a thunderous forehand from Swiatek. It’s 4-4 now but Swiatek nets! Back to 5-4 and a slight lead for the Ukrainian.

Swiatek 5-7 6-6 Svitolina – Svitolina moves ahead in tie-break
The first mini-break goes the way of Svitolina as she forces Swiatek into an overhit forehand. The Ukrainian lets out a scream but can she consolidate the opening? She can! It’s wild from Swiatek with a forehand and followed up by an ace from the Ukrainian.

*Swiatek 5-7 5-6 Svitolina – Swiatek serving to stay in match
A 93mph winner from Swiatek is met by Svitolina’s first ace of the match to start this game as both women trade big shots.
Svitolina’s second serve comes under pressure now, though, and Swiatek takes full advantage to find another winner and 30-30. But it’s a poor mistake that follows from the Pole and Svitolina has a game point…and what a shot! It’s another tame second serve that has her in trouble but, at full stretch, it’s a simply marvellous passing shot with her backhand to win the game.
6-5 up she moves and Swiatek has to serve out to stay in this match once again

Pegula 4-6 6-2 4-6 Vondrousova
Marketa Vondrousova fights from a break down in the final set to eliminate American Jessica Pegula!!
Fourth seed Pegula led 3-1 in the third frame, prior to the closing of the roof on No 1 Court, but her Czech opponent finished strong to advance to the quarter-finals!
She will face the winner of Swiatek vs Svitolina…

Swiatek 5-7 5-5 Svitolina* – Swiatek holds
A massive service game coming up for Swiatek and it starts in the best possible way with a sweeping backhand to win the first point. A crunching forehand follows and she leads 30-0.
Two more points follow and a hold to love is just what she would have wanted.
