Kalvin Phillips has revealed his loan move to West Ham ends a near two-year long pursuit by manager David Moyes.

The England midfielder has joined the Hammers for the remainder of the season after struggling for game time at Manchester City.

The 28-year-old has made just two Premier League starts for Pep Guardiola’s side since moving to the Etihad Stadium from Leeds in a £42million deal in the summer of 2022.

Phillips completed the move on Friday after West Ham rekindled an interest they first showed when he left Leeds.

Phillips told the club’s Iron Cast podcast: “I’m delighted. I was in Abu Dhabi with City, a warm-weather training camp, and all I could think about was getting a loan sorted.

“I spoke to ‘Moyesy’ over the phone while I was there. He reassured me that this was probably the best place for me to come on loan and that I’ll love every second and minute of it, and so far I have done. I’m very happy coming here. I’m looking forward to getting going.

“I think, honestly, if City hadn’t come in for me 18 months ago, then West Ham would have been the club I would’ve come to. It was always in the pipeline.

“Moyesy, he’s been after me for two years, he told me on the phone. So eventually, it was going to happen.”

Arsenal look unlikely to complete any January transfer business, with Mikel Arteta suggesting his frustration at his inability to make any additions to his squad.

Recent results have seen them slide away from the top of the table, but with no club surging clear, the London club remain in the hunt for the title.

A consistent goalscorer would perhaps have been the individual they wished to pursue, with Gabriel Jesus short of consistency and Eddie Nketiah yet to establish himself as a regular starter, but the financial restrictions have left the club short of options.

It seems unlikely that they would let Dewsbury-Hall go at this juncture but Brighton have begun negotiations and will try to put together a compelling offer, with Leicester another club that risk falling foul of PSR.

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino insists everyone at the club remains relaxed heading into the final 48 hours of the January transfer window.

The Blues have been linked with a move for Aston Villa frontman Jhon Duran and Newcastle foward Callum Wilson as well as Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies. England midfielder Conor Gallagher is a reported target for Tottenham to leave Stamford Bridge, while Fulham and Wolves are said to be tracking Armando Broja.

Pochettino, though, maintains his squad is fully focused on just one target – getting a result at Liverpool on Wednesday night.

“I am excited for the for the game tomorrow. It is a great opportunity for us to face a team that is doing really well,” Pochettino said. “For Thursday (transfer deadline day), I think it is not going to happen many things. I think we are quiet and the market is quiet.”

Pochettino told a press conference: “At the moment, all is quiet, calm and relaxed.”

Before the bombshell news that Jurgen Klopp would be departing the club at the end of the season, it looked set to be a quiet January for Liverpool, who invested well last summer.

With a refreshed midfield beginning to gel, Klopp’s side have re-established themselves as title contenders, though Klopp’s impending exit makes pursuit of another Premier League crown all the more important.

The German may yet seek one or two targeted additions to accentuate their squad, with a centre-half perhaps the likeliest signing after a serious injury to Joel Matip.

Chelsea have made no secret of their willingness to sell Armando Broja during this transfer window, to recoup some much needed funds to help with their profit and sustainability goals. But the Blues have rejected a loan offer from Wolves for the striker, demanding that any deal has a permanent transfer obligation worked into the terms.

With Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s investment in the club paving the way for a new era at Old Trafford, Manchester United could yet be on the lookout for additions at the end of the January transfer window.

Erik ten Hag’s side have slipped away from the chase for a top-four place and look in need of a boost to the Dutchman’s options, despite a significant number of arrivals over the last couple of years.

Defensively, the reliance on Jonny Evans and occasional deployment of Luke Shaw centrally suggest a centre-half might be a wise signing, while Jadon Sancho departure on loan could free up a place for a new winger.
