The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow for parts of England and Wales this week.

Wintry showers will hit the regions during the early hours of Thursday morning and will last until the early hours of Friday.

“A band of rain, sleet, and increasingly snow, will push north on Thursday bringing up to 2cm snow at lower-levels, 2-5cm on ground above 200m, and perhaps as much as 10-20cm above 400m,” the Met Office said.

The warning affects East Midlands, East of England, North East England, North West England, Wales, West Midlands, and Yorkshire & Humber.

This comes as a weather pattern brings cold air from the north while mild air keeps nudging in from the south, creating conditions for frost and snow.

Meanwhile, up to 170mm of rain heavy rain is set to lash Scotland today with a yellow weather warning in place until 9pm.

The Met Office said there is a “small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded”, which may result in damage to buildings.

What to expect from today’s weather warning in Scotland

A lengthy period of rain looks likely to develop across parts of western Scotland on Sunday and Monday, the Met Office has said.

Initially, rain will slowly push north through Sunday, before pivoting and then returning south later on Monday.

Some southern parts of the warning area may see a drier interlude for a time on Monday and there is some uncertainty as to how far north the rain gets.

40-75 mm of rain may fall quite widely in the warning area, but there is potential for 120-170 mm in the wettest areas, this perhaps most likely in parts of Argyll, Lochaber and Wester Ross.

More storms to come this year?

After Storm Jocelyn last week, the UK will continue to see spells of wet and windy weather, especially in northern and western areas, according to the Met Office.

The forecasters added that long range models suggest that late January and early February weather could see some drier interludes further south, while wet and windy weather remains possible in the north and west.

In terms of what this means for named storms, it’s too early to pick out when the next one might be, but there remains a chance of further impactful weather as we move through meteorological winter and into spring.

When will UK see snow again?
