Amar Gopal Bose was an Indian-American teacher, electrical engineer, subcontractor and founder of the world-famous Bose Corporation. An electrical and sound engineer, Amar Bose was a professor at the world-renowned institute Massachusett’s Institute of Technology for 45 years. In 2011, he donated a large portion of his company, Bose Corporation, to Massachusett’s Institute of Technology. He changed the world of music with his inventions. Amar Gopal Bose was born on 2 November 1929 in Philadelphia, USA. His father Noni Gopal Bose was a Bengali Indian freedom fighter who escaped from the British and went to America. His mother Charlotte was French and German-American. She was a teacher by profession. According to Amar Bose, his mother was more Bengali than him. She was a vegetarian and was interested in ‘Vedanta’ and ‘Hindu philosophy’.
Amar had shown interest in entrepreneurship since childhood. He attended ‘Abington Senior High School’ in Pennsylvania and then enrolled in Massachusett’s Institute of Technology. Thereafter, Bose was awarded several important patents which are still important for Bose Corporation. All these patents were related to the area of loudspeaker design, non-linear, two-state-modulated, Class-D power processing.
Today, Bose Corporation provides employment to approximately 9000 people worldwide and produces high quality products for homes, cars and professional audio. In addition, it also conducts basic research in acoustics and related fields. Amar Bose never ‘made public’ his company, which was why he was able to carry out risky research for a long time.
