India’s great litterateur Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was born on 27 June 1838 in a rich and affluent family of Kanthal Pada, a small village in Pargana district, West Bengal. His father Jadav Chandra Chattopadhyay was a government official who later also served as a sub-collector of Midnapore in Bengal, while his mother Durgadevi was a domestic woman who cared deeply for her home family.
