Sindhutai was born on 14 November 1947 in ‘Pimpri Meghe’ village in Wardha district of Maharashtra.. His father’s name was ‘Abhimaan Sathe’, who was a charavah (grazing animal).
Because of being a daughter, Sindhutai was disliked by everyone in the house (because she was a daughter; not a son), so she was called as ‘chindhi’ (torn piece of cloth) in the house.. But his father wanted to teach Sindhu, so he used to send Indus to school against Indus’s mother..
Due to opposition of mother and economic conditions of the house, the education of Sindhu continued to be disrupted.. When she passed the fourth grade examination, she had to leave school because of economic conditions, home responsibilities and child marriage..

When Sindhutai was 10 years old, she was married to 30-year-old ‘Srihari Sapka’.. She was the mother of 3 children when she was 20 years old..
Sindhutai complained to the district officer about the head of the village who did not pay the villagers their money.. To avenge this insult, Mukhiyana Srihari (Sindhutai’s husband) instigated Sindhutai to drive her out of the house when she was pregnant for 9 months..
The same night she gave birth to a daughter in Tabelle (cows and buffaloes).. When she went to her mother’s house, her mother refused to let her stay (her father died, otherwise she would have supported her daughter). Sindhutai was staying with her daughter at the railway station.. Begging to fill the stomach and staying in the cremation at night to keep herself and daughter safe.
In this struggle of his, he realized that there are so many orphans in the country who need a mother.. From then on, he decided that whatever orphan would come to him would become his mother.. He adopted his own daughter in the trust of ‘Shri Dagadusheth Halwai, Pune, Maharashtra’ so that she could become the mother of all the orphans..

Sindhutai has devoted his entire life to orphans.. That is why she is called “Mai” (Mother). They have adopted 1050 orphans.. He has 207 sons-in-law and 36 daughters-in-law in his family today.. Have more than 1000 grandchildren.
His own daughter is a lawyer and many of the adopted children are doctors, engineers, lawyers and many of them also run their own orphanages.. Sindhutai has received a total of 273 national and international awards including the “Ahilyabai Hokkar Award” by the state of Maharashtra for social workers working for women and children..
She uses all these money from the award for orphanages.. His orphanage is located in Pune, Wardha, Saswad (Maharashtra).. In 2010, a Marathi film based on the life of Sindhutai was made “Mee Sindhutai Sapka”, which was selected for the 54th London Film Festival.. When Sindhutai’s husband turned 80, he came to live with them..
Sindhutai accepted her husband as a son, saying that now she is only a mother. Today she tells me with great pride that she (her husband) is their eldest son.
Sindhutai also writes poetry and his poems have the full essence of life. She expresses her gratitude to her mother because she says that if her mother had supported her in the house after she had taken them out of her husband’s house, she would not have been the mother of so many children today..
