In 2004, his tantalizing performance as Jerry/Daphne in the Marilyn Monroe-starrer Some Like It Hot (1959) was included in the list of ‘100 Greatest Movie Characters of All Time’ by Premiere Magazine at #29.
Before giving any take, Jack would exclaim, “It’s magic time.”
He was considered for the role of George opposite Elizabeth Taylor in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) before Richard Burton stepped into the role.
Jack was the first ever male actor to earn an Academy Award in the leading role (for 1973’s Save the Tiger) as well as supporting actor role (for 1955’s Mister Roberts) in the award show’s history. Some of the other actors to hold the same distinction are Gene Hackman, Kevin Spacey, Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson, and Denzel Washington.
His role as Shelley Levine from Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) became the inspiration for the character of Gil Gunderson on the popular animated series, The Simpsons.
