Kim Bum-soo is a South Korean singer, musician, television personality, host, and judge. Describing his high school experience, he stated that he felt like an “outsider” in high school. He later joined a church choir and was praised for his singing ability.

In 1999, Kim Bum-soo made his debut as a singer with the release of his album titled A Promise.

His song Hello Goodbye Hello was released in 2001 and it peaked at number #51 on the Billboard Hot Singles Sales chart.

On December 17, 2002, Kim Bum-soo released his album I Miss You (보고 싶다) and the title track from the album was included in the soundtrack for the Korean television drama Stairway to Heaven.

For the song Sun Sets in My Heart (가슴에 지는 태양), he bagged the KBS Music Award for “Bonsang” in 2004.

To complete his mandatory military service, he served as an “entertainment soldier” under the Ministry of National Defense from April 2006 to October 2008.

In 2011, he won the Melon Music Award in the “Best R&B/Ballad Award” category for Please (제발).

For a long time, Kim Bum-soo struggled with being labeled a “faceless” singer (a term used in South Korea for singers who are not considered visually appealing by the public). It also partly affected his career as the industry avoided putting him in the spotlight even though he had established himself as one of the country’s best vocalists and that was because of South Korea’s standards of looks being treated just as importantly as talent.

In an interview with ATK Magazine in August 2016, he stated, “I was not happy that my song was judged by my appearance, not by my talent, or the song itself. I wanted to show and let them think how I was prepared, and listen to my song first. At first, I felt sad that only my appearance stood out.” However, he added that he believed the comments “made him stronger” and people have started to “take my songs and skills just as they are, and I really appreciate it”.
